: a highly infectious disease of African cattle that is caused by a poxvirus (genus Capripoxvirus), is marked by mild fever, loss of weight, and the development of inflammatory nodules in the skin and mucous membranes tending to become necrotic and ulcerous, and that may be transmitted by insects
